North St. Louis, MO TMJ Pain and Auto Injury
Jaw pain is a fairly common condition reported by many people after a car wreck, and it can be hard for some health practitioners to diagnose the root of the problem. Complicating the issue, oftentimes you won't experience TMJ pain until many weeks or months after a crash.
Dr. Holland has helped many people with jaw pain after an injury, and the medical literature explains what causes these types of problems. During a collision, the tissues in your spine are often stretched or torn, causing ligament, muscle, or nerve injury. This can clearly cause pain in the neck and back, but since your central nervous system is one functioning unit, inflammation of the nerves can cause pain in other parts of your body.
For instance, with radicular pain, irritation of a nerve can cause prickling or numbness in the arm and hand. Similarly, it can affect parts of your body above the injured tissues, like your head and jaw. Headaches after a crash are very common because of neck injury, and the jaw works the same way. Dr. Holland sees this very frequently in our North St. Louis, MO office.
Research Supports Chiropractic Lessens TMJ Pain After an Auto Accident
Studies have shown that the source of many jaw or TMJ symptoms starts in the neck and that treatment of the underlying neck injury can fix the secondary headaches or jaw symptoms. The trick to resolving these symptoms is simple: Dr. Holland will work to restore your spine back to health, decreasing the inflammatory reaction, treating the injured tissues, and removing the irritation to the nerves in your spine.
Dr. Holland has found that jaw and headache symptoms often resolve once we restore your spine to its healthy state.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Chronic Back Pain
A recent paper from the University of Utah confirms what our North St. Louis, MO patients have experienced: your North St. Louis, MO chiropractor is the best first option for an event of back pain.
In this paper, 747 patients were treated for low back pain. Each person was assessed based on the first person they sought treatment with, whether it was a primary care physician, a chiropractor, a physiatrist (also known as a rehabilitation physician), or a physical therapist.
What the authors discovered is that the subjects who first saw a chiropractor had fewer advanced imaging tests and fewer surgical procedures.
Other studies have found the same results. A 2012 study found that chiropractic patients had the best functional recovery and pain relief for chronic back pain.
Chiropractic works by restoring the natural, pain-free function of your spine. Dr. Holland and our team help your body heal with gentle chiropractic adjustments that don't use drugs or risky surgical procedures.

Chiropractic Can Alleviate Need for Back Surgery
The latest numbers show that there are over 500,000 spinal surgeries each year in the US. Although sometimes it's necessary to have back surgery, the reality is that if you can prevent this type of invasive procedure, you're often better off.
Dr. Holland is here to make sure that people in North St. Louis, MO have a healthy, non-surgical option for back problems. We've helped many patients recover from back pain without the need for surgery.

Research Shows Chiropractic Care Helps Avoid Back Surgery
In this report, 1,885 workers with back injuries were assessed over a three year period. When the workers first sought treatment with a surgeon, over 42 percent wound up having back surgery. For those who saw only a chiropractor, only 1.5 percent had surgery!

Low Back Pain and the SI Joint
We help a good number of people with back pain in our North St. Louis, MO office, and Dr. Holland finds that many cases of back pain start in the sacroiliac (SI) joint. Research has revealed that roughly 25% of all back pain begins in the SI joint, and now fresh research ratifies what we have observed in our office: chiropractic is an effective way to treat this pain.
Research Supports Chiropractic Treatment Helps Increase Movement in the SI Joint
In the study released in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, 32 women who suffered from sacroiliac joint syndrome were separated into two groups and asked to engage in one of two treatment therapies. one group went through a chiropractic adjustment only at the sacroiliac joint, and the other group had an adjustment to the sacroiliac joint as well as the lumbar spine.
Scientists found significantly more improvements in both pain and movement immediately following treatment, two days later, and 30 days later for the individuals who underwent high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation to both the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine. This demonstrates that chiropractic manipulation applied to these two areas offers both prompt and long term benefits for sacroiliac joint pain sufferers—even with only one treatment round.
Therefore, if you are having trouble with sacroiliac joint pain, or live with back and leg pain and are ready to find out if your sacroiliac joint is the source, a visit to our North St. Louis, MO office may be the first—and best—step towards recovery. Give our office a call today at (314) 588-9100.

North St. Louis, MO Neck Pain and Auto Injury
We manage many auto injury cases in our North St. Louis, MO office, and a widespread symptom our patients report is neck pain. Chiropractic care is an effective way to treat neck pain. Let's look at how neck pain is caused by a crash and how Dr. Holland can help you.
It's not surprising that neck pain is the most common problem experienced after an auto injury. During even a low velocity crash, your head is exposed to extremely rapid acceleration. In such collisions, a head that normally weighs about 10 pounds can instantly weigh eight times as much. This force exerts a serious strain on the tissues of the neck. The bones of your spinal column are held together with strong bands of tissue called ligaments, and these ligaments provide stability for your neck. These ligaments can be sprained during a collision, just as the ligaments in your ankle can be sprained. A sprain means that the ligament is stretched or torn.
When you experience a sprained ligament, the damaged area become swollen and tender, and that's what happens after a car crash. Your chiropractor helps by increasing movement in the injured area, which helps the ligaments heal and helps decrease scar tissue.
Dr. Holland is here in North St. Louis, MO to help you recover from neck pain. We've been helping patients since 2000 and we can probably help you, too. Dr. Holland will first determine what's causing your pain and then work to restore your body to its natural functioning. Give our office a call today at (314) 588-9100 to make an appointment.
Chiropractic Before Surgery, Says AMA
Although some people are still uncertain about chiropractic care, even the American Medical Association (AMA) suggests that adjustments should be tried prior to surgery--the one option that should be a last resort.
Dr. Holland has seen many back pain patients in our North St. Louis, MO office who have been suffering for years and who are afraid that they might need an operation for their back pain. Dr. Holland has had great success in helping patients recover and avoid risky back surgery, and the science backs up our experience.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps You Avoid Risky Surgery
For example, in one study carried out on about 2,000 Washington State workers who suffered from a back injury while at work, more than 42% who saw a surgeon first following their injury found themselves having back surgery within three years. That compares to just 1.5% of the individuals who first sought treatment with chiropractic care, demonstrating that this non-invasive approach is very effective at keeping you out of the operating room.

Headache and Car Accidents
We manage many car accident cases in in our North St. Louis, MO office, and a widespread symptom we see in our patients is headache. Let's look at the root cause of headache after an accident and see how chiropractic care can help.
There are many different kinds of headache. Headache that's caused by an auto collision, though, typically begins as tension or strain in the muscle tissue of the neck. In a wreck, the neck muscles can be damaged, which results in swelling and soreness. These types of headache can be felt in different places, including the back of the head or even the forehead.
Another common cause of pain after a collision that we see in our North St. Louis, MO office is cervicogenic headache, or headaches that start in injured ligaments of the neck. Ligament injury is very common after a crash, and it's important to get therapy for this type of problem to avoid the development of scar tissue.
Chiropractic care is an excellent way to treat headaches, including those brought about by auto injuries. Dr. Holland can help reduce the irritation and tension in your neck, which will help relieve the headache pain.

We know how difficult long-term headache pain can be. Dr. Holland and our staff have worked with many men and women in our North St. Louis, MO chiropractic practice, and we've had great success in helping people reduce their headache pain.
Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Cervicogenic Headaches
A 2016 research paper verifies what we see in our practice. In this study, the authors started with 110 patients who were suffering from headaches that originated in the cervical spine. 58 of these patients were given a series of neck adjustments; 52 were given some stretches and exercises. The treatment period for both groups was four weeks.
The paper found that the patients who received cervical and thoracic spinal adjustments "experienced significantly greater reductions in headache intensity, disability, headache frequency, headache duration, and medication intake as compared to the group that received mobilization and exercise."
The investigation also found that these outcomes were maintained at the three-month follow-up exam.
